How to renew your CSCS card

With almost every employer in the construction industry requiring workers to have the appropriate CSCS card before they begin working, it’s important to keep an eye on the expiry date and renew before it’s too late.

Each CSCS card will expire at different times, so while the Red (provisional card) CSCS Card is only valid for six months, others such as the Green (Labourer) and Blue (Skilled Worker) are valid for five years. All cards, except Red, can be renewed within a one-year window of the expiry date – starting six months before the date, and ending six months after. Renewing your card after this time can be more complex, so we advise workers renew as soon as possible to avoid losing out on work.

Renewal is easy

When your card is up for renewal, you’ll need to prove that you meet the correct qualification and training criteria to carry out your job. For those who don’t have time to take away from work, or travel to a training centre, we offer the UK’s only online course, Safe2Site, which is CSCS approved for the Green Card. Our online training is a flexible and interactive way of learning, and once you’ve completed the online assessment, you’ll have all the documents and skills required.

Once you have completed the relevant training for your skill set, you will also need  to take the CITB Health Safety and Environment test. This test, along with the card you apply for, will change depending on what type of work you do, what qualifications you hold, and whether you’re a member of a professional body – however, the price will always remain at £21.

Next Steps

On passing the test, you will then need to get in touch with the CSCS Contact Centre, either over the phone or by post using the downloadable application form.

If you choose to call the centre, you will be expected to provide information on your current or previous employer, including company name, best contact name and contact details. A payment of £36 for the card will also be required, so make sure you have a credit or debit card at the ready. The card will then be dispatched the following working day.

For the postal service, you will need to supply the necessary documentation and payment via the application form – however, this can take up to 15 working days.
